Mount Airy Store was a hive of activity at the beginning of the 20th century- canal boats stopped here to discharge passengers, freight and mail, as did the trains (after the demise of the canal). Now, it is a sleepy little hamlet, just a few houses, the train, and as always, the mighty James River. The store is just a few steps to the Hardware River, and a few more to the James (literally). The bottom land and surrounding 1,000 acres is a state- protected wildlife management area. Scottsville, 5 miles upstream offers restaurants, brewery and most of the stores that you are likely to need. Charlottesville, is 20 minutes away.
