HISTORICAL INFO - Havers Hall was built in 1830 by the Stubbs family. The cottage on the property dates to the late 1700s. The Stubbs were among the first English settlers in Virginia: arriving circa 1650. Family members also built nearby Cappahosic (on the Federal Registry). The old Cappahosic Road, a main thoroughfare in Colonial times, originally ran adjacent to Havers Hall. The Cappahosic ferry was used by George Washington to cross the York River prior to the Revolutionary War.
The historical photo is circa 1875, following the Civil War. It depicts Dr. Thomas Jones Clopton, who served in the Gloucester Light Dragoons, 5th Virginia Cavalry of the Confederacy, and family. His father was Dr. Thomas C. Clopton, who bought the property from the Stubbs family. He commanded Company D of the Virgina 24th Cavalry and is recognized as a Honored Gloucester Resident, as are several of the Stubbs family.
Havers Hall is in the midst of perhaps the most historic area of the U.S. Besides the nearby Historic Triangle (Yorktown, Jamestown and Williamsburg), Gloucester County sites include Rosewell Mansion ruins (one of the finest manor homes in the Colonies and where Thomas Jefferson wrote a rough draft of the Declaration of Independence), Cappahosic Ferry House (which still stands), Gloucester Courthouse and Pocahontas' birthplace, Werowocomoco (just purchased by the National Park Service to be part of the Captain John Smith Historic Trail).
Bricks from a Havers Hall chimney were also used to reconstruct Dr. Walter Reed's birthplace (who discovered the cause of Yellow Fever) in 1926, a 1/4 mile away.
